Top 5 Tips: How to Work From Home

In the wake of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, working from home has become more prevalent than ever before. For many of us, including myself, the transition to work from home remotely has been a blessing in disguise, offering newfound flexibility and convenience. However, navigating the nuances of working from home can present its own set of challenges. Thankfully, with the help of modern technology and a few simple strategies, you can transform your home into a productive and enjoyable workspace. Let’s dive into my top five tips for working from home (WFH) successfully!

Tip #1: Establish a Dedicated Work From Home Workspace

Creating a designated workspace within your home is essential for maintaining focus and productivity. While you don’t necessarily need a dedicated room, it’s important to carve out a designated area that is conducive to work. This could be a corner of a room (I work out of my bedroom!), a desk in a quiet area, or even a cozy nook where you can set up your laptop. By having a dedicated space, you can mentally switch into work mode more easily and minimize distractions.

Tip #2: Set a Schedule and Stick to It

One of the biggest challenges of working from home is maintaining a sense of structure and routine. Without the traditional office environment, it’s easy to blur the lines between work and leisure time. To combat this, establish a daily schedule and stick to it as much as possible. Set specific work hours, breaks, and designated times for tasks such as checking emails and attending meetings. By sticking to a schedule, you can create a sense of normalcy and ensure that you stay on track with your work responsibilities.

Tip #3: Dress for Success

While the allure of working in your pajamas may be tempting, dressing for success can have a significant impact on your productivity and mindset. Take the time to get dressed each morning as if you were going into the office. (Side note: this doesn’t mean you have to wear a suit and tie! But choosing comfortable yet professional attire can help you feel more focused and motivated.) Plus, it can serve as a psychological cue that it’s time to get down to business. I personally dress up from the waist up for my zoom calls, but will absolutely rock some sweat pants and fluffy pink slippers while I work from home!

Tip #4: Stay Connected with Colleagues

Working from home can sometimes feel isolating, especially if you’re used to collaborating with colleagues in person. To combat feelings of loneliness and stay connected with your team, make an effort to communicate regularly through email, video calls, and instant messaging platforms. Schedule virtual meetings and brainstorming sessions to maintain a sense of camaraderie and collaboration. By staying connected with your colleagues, you can foster a sense of teamwork and support, even from a distance. Want to take it a step further? Schedule a virtual coffee date, or schedule evening dinner with your team!

Tip #5: Take Regular Breaks and Practice Self-Care

It’s easy to get caught up in work when you’re in the comfort of your own home, but it’s important to remember to take regular breaks and prioritize self-care. Schedule short breaks throughout the day to stretch, take a walk, or simply step away from your workspace. Additionally, make time for activities that help you recharge and relax, whether it’s reading a book, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in a hobby. By taking care of your physical and mental well-being, you can ensure that you stay refreshed and energized throughout the workday.
